WORLDPLAY 2011

January 30 @ 8 pm:  When Smiles are Done  by Goh Poh Seng (1936-2010)  (Singapore)

                                                                                          Translated by
                                                                                          Directed by Lina de Guevara

Full of humour and incisive dialogue, this play tells a story of family conflicts. Goh is among the pioneer Singaporean writers and one of the first to use "Singlish", the characteristic Singaporean popular language.

February 6 @ 8pm: Geez!  by Putu Wijaya  (Indonesia)

                                                  Translated by
                                                  Directed by Lina de Guevara

A man comes back to life and the reactions of his family and friends really surprise him!

Engaging and quirky, Geez! is a wonderful example of avant-garde Indonesian theatre.

February 13 @ 8 pm: Girls Shouldn't Play Soccer  by Marta Buchaca  (Catalunya, Spain)

Translated by Elisabet Ráfols & Tom Bentley-Fisher
                                                                                                    Directed by Lina de Guevara

Apparently simple, there's a dark mystery in this play set in a waiting room of a hospital after a car crash.

February 20 @ 8 pm: Dreary and Izzy  by Tara Beagan  (Canada)
                                                                              Directed by Erin Macklem

Of Ntlaka'pamux (Thompson River Salish) and Irish Canadian heritage, born and raised in Alberta, Tara Beagan has become well known by her outstanding plays, one of which, Thy Neighbour's Wife, won the 2005 Dora Mavor Moore Award.

WITH GRATITUDE

Puente Theatre acknowledges with deep gratitude that we live, work, and create on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking Peoples, now known as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations.

As a company dedicated to amplifying diverse voices and connecting cultures through theatre, we honour the enduring presence, knowledge, and creative spirit of the Indigenous Peoples who have stewarded these lands for thousands of years. We recognize that reconciliation is an ongoing practice, and we are committed to listening, learning, and acting in ways that support justice, equity, and meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities.

We  invite our audiences,  collaborators, and communities to reflect on their own  relation-ships with the land and to join us in building a more inclusive and respectful future.
